Cos of the size of market.
South Korea's market is small and dying, China is hard to get in without a China born member like Victoria, Fei, Jia and SUJU-M.
They thought that by hooking up a collab with big name in US market, they will make it big.
PSY, WG, SNSD, Rainbow, Hyuna.... the list of Kpop artists signing up with American labels is getting longer by the days.

Yes, the market is huge.. yet the appetite for these idols is small... as far as I can tell.
I often wonder if there is a specific formula to making an Asian idol successful over here.

There isn't any. Don't even mention idol, I can take to the level of showbiz celebrities. The last Asian to be successful in American showbiz is Jackie Chan. Not even Asian titans like Jay Chou, Andy Lau, AKB48...etc can even make much of a impact. Like you said, American markets don't really have the appetite for Asian artists not just idols.

Good point, I hadn't even thought about it beyond idols... You're right... To be honest... there isn't any interest in the general American consciousnesses for ANY thing international.. its actually pretty sad.

Well... one reason why American showbiz is mainstream. Cos they are supposed to be the top of everything showbiz from Hollywood to Music scenes and sales to modeling and publications to Broadway...etc.
Asia to American showbiz people is just like how a first world country treat second/third world countries.
True that HK movies scenes is declining in recent years, but India's Bollywood is the second biggest movie market behind US.
Same to Japan who recently took over the no.1 music market from US.
There is a lot of developments in showbiz from countries like Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan (which includes Cpop from Singapore and Malaysia), as well as the massive China. That on top of Japan/Korea.
Technically Australia is also part of Asia now, and they got good stuffs down under as well.
I think for most American, especially the older generations, to open up to other countries' showbiz is degrading US's showbiz. Plus its cost too much to flew all those foreign artists over on top of giving them english lessons.

That is all true, but.. to be honest.. most older Americans still have a horrible notion of American = best.. and nothing else compares. Hell, even my parents are that way.

Well why would anyone want to think someone else is better when you enjoyed being the best for years.
Its like most UK people doesn't look at countries at the same level, since they were the powerhouse for centuries.

That is exactly the same attitude... I runs rampant here.. I don't believe that way but the generation before me certainly does. It annoys me a good bit.

Well there is the good and bad of such mindset.
The good part refers to support the nation's development and their products.
The bad of cos refers to the lack of enduring changes with time.
But if the good part starts to disappear, America will really lose their edge as a world power in due time. And that doesn't take more than a decade. When its own countries' products, its always cheaper and provides more jobs for the citizen. When its comes to depend on imported products, means everything is more costly and jobs are lesser.
Like my side is heavily dependent on imports, resulting that buying a car here is equal to buying half a dozen of them in US.
